Great Room Remodel: Day 1

We went to a couple hardware stores this morning, then while I did more cleaning up and burning, Matthew got to work on filling in the back of the small arches. When we bought the house, we didn't love the sort of generic Southwest style of it. We also didn't love that the small archways were a perpetual gathering place for stuff. I still have kids who do things like shoot Nerf guns and throw balls, so I haven't put pretty decorations there to deter clutter and there were always papers and tools and who knows what else littering the platforms. Our plan is to turn the three openings into Craftsman style built-in book shelves with cupboards underneath.

We didn't like all the bulky boxes and round corners in the house, particularly those around the fireplace. We were also confused as there is wiring for surround sound but it faces the wrong direction in relation to where all the media outlets are. We want to put the TV above the fireplace, so we ran an HDMI cable and will wire it for power. We're still not 100% sure on the design of the fireplace, but we're thinking stone will be involved.

We've made a lot of dust and there are nails and other debris all over the great room, so it's likely our meals will be eaten on the back porch for the foreseeable future. It's a good thing that September in Albuquerque is a glorious time to be outside.
