Matthew and I got up at 5:30 am, just like any other weekday. I made him his usual spinach omelet and toast, packed his lunch, and sent him off to work. He did get some left over cake from earlier in the week in his lunch pail, but otherwise it was a pretty typical day.
When he got home a little after 5:00 pm though, that's when we got the party started.
We had home made hamburgers and french fries and soda pop for dinner, then moved on to opening presents. We had been discussing photography during the meal and how Matthew isn't interested in portraiture or taking pictures of every day life, so he was being overly dramatic as I snapped photos of him opening his gifts.
He got a first aid kit, a mattress cover, and some candy cane hot chocolate from his parents, and a Nerf gun from the kids. His big birthday/Christmas present from me was the new cell phone he got about a month ago. Now that the boys each had a weapon, they of course had to have a battle. Mercy was especially helpful at retrieving darts for her daddy.
Matthew had originally requested milk shakes with Tillamook ice cream for his birthday dessert, but that didn't work out, so we had chocolate chip cookies instead. They turned out to be a happy compromise.
By the time all that was done, it was time for scriptures and prayer and getting the kids to bed. Matthew and I watched an episode of Arrow and then it was our bed time. Derrick called, so the phone call with his brother kept Matthew up a little later than usual, but otherwise the day was rather a lot like any other.

While his birthday may have seemed a little anti-climactic, Matthew is so good at finding happiness everywhere and being grateful for it. He turns everything from teeth brushing to grocery shopping into a party and life is one big celebration for him. He keeps the serious side of me in check and makes us all lighten up in the face of difficulty or conflict. He works hard to provide for his family, and takes his responsibility as husband and father very seriously. While he is not perfect, he is so good, and always means well. His goal is for us to be happy and to help us all return to our Heavenly Father. I am so grateful to have someone with that focus at the head of our family.
Happy Birthday, Matthew!
