Fossil Hunting

We made it an early morning today and drove up to the Jemez mountains to look for fossils. After a roughly 90 minute drive, toward the end of which Mercy threw up due to car sickness, we met up with the Jeb Brown's and the Sterling Brown's.

We hiked about a quarter mile up a ravine where we spent a couple hours sifting through loose rocks searching for evidence of shells and plants from long ago. Hyrum was genuinely interested in finding treasures and was particularly enamored with using Jeb's cleaning kit. Abraham was more drawn to the idea of breaking bigger rocks apart to see if there was something of interest hidden inside, and Mercy spent her time climbing from one snack eating spot to another. Matthew found a few really cool specimens and I mostly just followed Mercy around. The day was lovely and it was so good to be up in the mountains with friends.

We came back down the mountain and settled near a river to eat our lunch. Everyone had other things to get to, so our group disbanded around noon. Our family stopped to briefly check out the Soda Springs on our way home.
