The kids have been counting down the days to Dad's birthday and were very excited to sing to him this morning. They were even more excited for him to open his presents.
I free motion quilted him a new blanket with orange flannel on one side and a Marvel comic book cotton print on the other. I also made him matching pajama pants. His parents sent him a work coat and some soap and a dispenser for out in the shop.
He was very excited about the soap dispenser. He doesn't have a slop sink in the garage, but has been wanting to put one in the laundry room, so while I went on a bike ride with Hannah and Rachael, Matthew worked on fixing the washing machine (which has been leaking rather profusely) in anticipation of rearranging the room to install a sink. He achieved an acceptable temporary fix, but decided to hold off on the remodel. I changed my clothes real quick after my ride and we set off for a date at a ramen place we've been intrigued by while Abraham was at school. The restaurant is right across the street from the UNM campus and due to the mid-day lunch rush we were unable to find a parking spot. We feared we'd run out of time, so we drove back down Central and ended up having burgers and fries at the Route 66 Diner. The food was okay, though over priced, and Mercy behaved very well. It wasn't what we had hoped for, but it was fun to get out all the same.
On the way home we drove past this store front for sale. If we were interested in a totally different life, it could be fun to run some sort of business and live up above our shop. Perhaps Matthew could pursue woodworking and we could sell fine furniture, or I could have some industrial machines and do commissioned quilting.
My plan for Matthew's birthday dinner was to have prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwiches on fancy artisan bread, but our Sam's Club card has expired and we weren't interested in shopping around for acceptable meat and cheese, so instead we had sausage quesadillas. Matthew requested Rice Krispie Treats instead of cake. When I asked if he wanted them a certain color or fun shape, he asked that they be sort of whitish in color and rectangular in shape. He sure makes pleasing him easy.
After the kids were in bed, I went down the street for Ashley's Christmas gift exchange party and Ryan came up the street to watch Antman and eat red vines with Matthew. It was a pretty laid back day, but the birthday boy kept insisting he was pleased. We all enjoyed singing to him as often as possible and expressing love for our fun-loving, hard-working, silly man of the house. Hooray for 31 years of Matthew!
