The Week of Transition

Sunday: Just a good old fashioned day of rest. Church went well, we had chicken quesadillas for lunch, Skyped with Matthew's family, and laid around a bit. We all rode with Matthew to deliver some cookies to a family he home teaches, then took the scenic route home. We set out to drive through historic Prophets Town, but you had to pay to get into the park, so we turned around and ended up just taking the main roads home. Abraham at least got a little nap out of it.

Monday: I got up at 7:30 am and read my scriptures, started a load of laundry, baked cookies, made the FHE treat, cleaned the kitchen, and had the dishwasher running all before anyone else stirred from their room. Matthew and I spent a good part of the day sanding molding, then he started a second round of putty. The boys played outside while Mercy and I delivered some more cookies and stopped by the library for the next couple of books in the series I'm reading. We had chicken quesadillas again for dinner, because Matthew's hankering was apparently not satiated yesterday. For Family Night I gave a lesson on choosing to be happy, Hyrum picked Jello for the treat, and we did wrestle mania for the activity. The Boys also got an episode of Avengers in while I did the dishes. Once the kids were all in bed, Matthew finished puttying and I folded the laundry I'd started in the morning.

Tuesday: I got up early and started a pot of yogurt. A local theater here shows kids movies for a dollar a ticket during the summer, and this week they were showing The Lego Movie. A friend of mine said she and her kids were planning on going this morning, so we decided to join them. Matthew and Hyrum enjoyed it, and while Abraham got pretty restless, he made it through the whole thing and seemed to like the experience well enough. Mercy, however, only lasted about half an hour, so she and I spent most of the show out in the hall. It was fun, but we learned that our family is just not quite old enough for the theater experience. We stopped by Harbor Freight for some more sand paper since we were already across the river, then came home and had lunch. Mercy took a short nap, then all three played in the boys room. Matthew and I spent the afternoon doing the final (pre-painting) sanding of the molding. We had hamburgers for dinner, then I sat outside with the kids while Matthew vacuumed up all the dust we'd created. The kids stayed up late playing in their room while Matthew kept working and I did my evening chores.

And then just like that, without much fanfare or warning, the great calm was over.

Wednesday: Matthew received an email on Tuesday strongly indicating that he would be offered the Sandia job. The HR department had already started contacting references for his background check, and they called here to verify some information regarding his transcripts. Nothing is official, but we have every reason to believe it will be. We're not sure of a timeline yet, but there is A LOT of work to be done before this house is ready to sell and we are ready to move. I had already made plans to meet our friends at the zoo, so this morning was spent playing, but as soon as we got home it was down to business. It took Matthew the entire time we were gone and then some to cover the floors and prep the house for painting. He had some issues with the spray gun, but by the end of the day was able to finish priming all the molding.

Thursday: Matthew spent all day sanding. I took the kids grocery shopping with me in the morning, then after lunch, during Mercy's nap, I mowed and edged the lawn. She came outside with us once she was up and I continued weeding and trimming the bushes. I gave Hyrum some clippers and he patiently sat meticulously trimming the long grass around the mailbox posts for over an hour. After the kids were in bed and my chores were done, I helped sand for about two hours and we went to bed around midnight.

Friday: Today Matthew finished the last bit of sanding, vacuumed, and started caulking. I started packing. I emptied out the tall white cabinet in the kitchen, threw some stuff away, and got 5 boxes filled. We are now in a season of paper plates and easy meals. In the afternoon I cut off the boys' golden locks. Their hair was always so sweaty and dirty and I finally broke down and shaved it short. We did set off some firecrackers during the day, which Mercy loved, and then lit the remainder of our stash once it got dark. Abraham was not terrified of the noise this year, and both boys especially enjoyed doing sparklers. Matthew stayed up caulking for another couple hours after the kids and I went to bed.

Saturday: I packed up all but one tote of toys in the boys' room, emptying out their tall white cabinet, while Matthew finished caulking. Once he was ready to paint, we all had to be locked out of the house. He started around 1:30 pm and we were carefully let back in to put the kids to bed just before 10:00 pm. We set up the bounce house, read books, ate snacks, rode bikes, played in the van, watched some shows on Hyrum's phone, drove to the store for some more snacks, played tag and hide-n-seek, caught fireflies, and entreated the neighbors for use of their toilet. It was a long afternoon. Around dinner time Matthew suggested I pick up a $5 pizza, so the kids and I drove to Domino's. The worker there gave me a strange look and called his manager over who told me it had been almost three years since they sold ready to go $5 pizza's. I conceded that it had probably been about three years since the last time I had purchased such a thing and kindly thanked them for not openly mocking me. Matthew informed me when I got home that it's Little Caesars that has the deal I was looking for, so I ran back out and procured us some dinner. Matthew was able to get a third coat of paint on the molding after the kids were safely tucked in bed.

I am happy for you all, but I had been secretly been hoping that you would have the opportunity to get a job in the Upper Midwest.
