Summer: Week 4

Matthew was back to work first thing Tuesday morning, but the rest of us were able to sleep in a bit. We then tackled the seemingly monumental task of getting back to normal life. We did laundry, went grocery shopping, and stopped by the library. The kids were happy to get back to park lunch, and in the afternoon Mercy got invited to play at Kinzlee’s house. Regular Cub Scouts is canceled for the summer, but we still have Activity Days. On Tuesday we did water games at the park.

We cleaned rooms on Wednesday morning, enjoyed water Wednesday at park lunch, then the Jensen’s came over for the afternoon. While they played, I cleaned out and organized the pantry. It maybe wasn’t the highest priority task at hand, but I was having a hard time knowing what I did and didn’t have in there and it was bothering me enough to make it to the top of the to do list.

Due to the Senior Olympics being in town, our swim team practices were at a different pool and on a different schedule. Thursday ended up being the only day we made it. We spent the rest of the day with the Jensen’s and Richardson’s, mostly at Becky’s house with park lunch in the middle. It’s always fun to get our three families together.

Matthew and the boys left for the Stake father/son camp out around 9:30 this morning. My plan was to run a couple errands, then hit up park lunch with Mercy. We went first to the library, then to Sprouts. While we were at the store, Cassie called and said she’d locked the keys in their van and wondered if we could get the spare and drive out to rescue them. Of coarse we were willing, but it would be mean missing park lunch, so I bought Mercy a box lunch from the to-go section. The sandwich, juice, chips, fruit leather, and cookie ended up being the absolute highlight of Mercy’s day. It always amazes me how little it often take to please my children. On the way back to the house to collect the key, Cassie called and said they were going to use AAA instead. Since we’d already gotten the box lunch, we decided to skip park lunch and instead stop by Becky’s to drop off the baby quilt I’d made her. After a short visit, we returned home, and got a third call from Cassie saying they hadn’t been able a hold of AAA and would we still be willing to rescue them. Back in the car we got! The job they’d been doing was in Edgewood, about 45 minutes away, so to make Mercy’s girl’s weekend a little less arduous, I made an exception to our no-screen-June and let her watch a movie on the tablet, which was, like the lunch, very exciting for her. In the afternoon, she came up with the idea of baking cookies for some ladies in the ward who have recently had babies. I let her help more than I usually do and other than browning the butter and transferring trays in and out of the oven, she did most of the work and had a great time. We had a “whatever” dinner, by her request, then walked down to the Walz’ to deliver the first batch of cookies. The Brown’s live a bit too far to walk, so we drove to deliver Susan’s cookies. Both women were touched by Mercy’s thoughtfulness, and she definitely made my mama heart proud. Her last request of the day was to have a sleepover with me in my bed, which I allowed only because we have a giant king size bed that I hoped would give her ample room to sleep without mauling me throughout the night. It turned out to be a perfectly lovely day.
