Abraham's Gifted Assesment

4/13/18
Abraham has been recommended to be tested for the gifted program. These are the notes his teacher wrote as her part of the initial assessment.

Reading: Abraham is excelling in reading. He is able to read above grade level text with comprehension. When retelling a story, he is able to use great details and make inferences. He is consistently scoring proficient and advanced on his weekly word wall assessments. He does need to be challenged as the grade level reading and spelling do not pose to be a task for Abraham.
Written Language: Abraham is a creative writer. He uses enriched vocabulary that makes his writing come to life. He is able to fully express meaning and feeling in his writing. His writing is above his peers in the class.
Math: Abraham is advanced in math. He is able to understand the concepts being presented through the 1st grade curriculum. He is able to tutor his peers that are having difficulty. In the classroom, Abraham is receiving enrichment in math completing double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, multi-step equations, and word problems.
Creativity: Abraham is extremely creative. He thinks outside the box when given an assignment. He enjoys drawing and has a level of detail that is above his peers. He is inquisitive and is creative in his thinking.

We received a letter from the gifted teacher at Painted Sky today:

Your son was pre-screened for gifted this week and passed the screening. Students must receive a 90% average on the screener to move onto the next stage of testing (Abraham received a 94%). At this juncture, I have passed your student's SAT packet onto the district diagnostician. You should hear from the district within the next 30 days to schedule further testing.

Abraham had his district screening test today. It was a series of computer tests which lasted a little over an hour that he said were easy peasy.

We got the scores for Abraham's screening test today:
Verbal (verbal knowledge and concepts reasoning ability) - 92
Quantitative (mathematical knowledge reasoning ability) - 93
Nonverbal (visual-spacial reasoning) - 93
Quantitative nonverbal (mathematical-visual-spacial ability) - 94
Composite (general cognitive reasoning ability) - 92

While all of his scores fall in the "superior" category, he needed at least one 98 to qualify for a full diagnostic. This means he does not meet the current standard for the gifted program. Matthew and I are sad for him because we understand what kinds of opportunities being in the gifted program could open up for him, but he just shrugged it off and said we could try again next year. I'll definitely talk to his next teacher about how to help him progress and hope that the structure and philosophy of the new school is enough to keep him sufficiently engaged.
