Balloon Fiesta

Jennie and I took the boys to Balloon Fiesta this morning. We got up and left while it was still dark and though traffic was a bit slow and confusing as we got close to the park, the driving in experience wasn't as terrible as anticipated. We found a semi central spot of grass where we spent about two hours watching hot air balloons of various shapes and sizes blow up and take off.

Matthew stayed home with the girls and it was fun to have an outing with just the boys. Mercy would have struggled with this outing as it was pretty chilly, there was walking in crowds, and lot's of standing around observing. She would have spent most of the time whining. We'll maybe try bringing her in another year or two.

The boys also struggled a bit to stay interested in the beginning when mostly just "regular" balloons were inflating, but the definite saving feature was that it was special shapes day. Their attention spans would not have lasted nearly as long if there hadn't been so many unique balloons to point out to each other. My favorite was an upside-down Humpty Dumpty with his legs up in the air. Hyrum found a panda which he naturally claimed to be his favorite, and Abraham couldn't pick one that he liked best.

It took us about 50 minutes to get home from the time we started walking out of the park, which was not nearly as bad as we had been led to expect. The whole outing was one of those where it sounds like a lot of work and you kind of drag your feet about it, but then it ends up being really neat and generally worth the effort. I don't know that we'll make a regular habit of going on our own, but it was definitely fun to have friends in town to share the experience with.
