While there are many things I like about our house, one thing I've hated from the day we moved in has been the giant front room. It's way to big to be a useful single room, be it a sitting room, living room, dining room, etc. We've tried a number of furniture arrangements to somewhat split the room into two spaces, but that never seemed to work well either. The lighting in the room is terribly insufficient and despite all efforts, no one likes spending time in it. Really the only thing it's been good for is setting up the bounce house or as a dumping ground for all our stuff after a trip. The other problem with the layout is that in order to get to the coat closet you have to pass all the way through the front room (which is carpeted), turn the corner, and pass the stairs. We don't park in the garage, so the path from the front door to the closet is always filthy and shoes are prone to being left somewhere along the route. The coat closet door is always being left open with it's contents perpetually spilling out, making it difficult to get to the laundry room and guest bathroom, not to mention driving me crazy.
We'd discussed building a room into the front room several months ago and the idea sat in the back of our minds until this evening. After getting the kids to bed, we used a sketch up program on the computer to make a 3D blueprint of our vision.
The goal is to create a proper entry space, with a conveniently located coat/shoe closet. We'll also add a bench across from the front window with coat hooks for guests. The hallway leading forward is 6 feet wide and with some added lighting will hopefully help draw people into the main part of the house. The room we're creating is still fairly sizable and we plan to use it as a music room, though it could easily be an office or den. I'm absolutely thrilled with the plans and Matthew seems to be itching for a project. We've saved up enough money to get started and I believe we're likely to tackle this remodel without much delay.
