Johnson's Spring Break

Many months ago, my parents decided to use their time share program to get a place in Santa Fe for their Spring Break. They arrived there on Sunday, spent Monday and Tuesday doing their own things, then drove down to see us on Wednesday. We didn't do anything too exciting during the day, mostly just visited and played with all the fun things Grandma brought. That evening they had made reservations for us to ride the gondola and eat dinner at the top of the mountain. Unfortunately, about an hour before we planned to leave we received a phone call informing us that the gondola had been shut down due to high winds. We went and picked up Matthew anyway, and decided to try a burger place called The 66 Pit Stop that came recommended by one of Matthew's co-workers. The joint was in a gas station on old route 66, well past our house to the West. The GPS didn't quite get us there, and we thought we had somehow missed it. We were on the old road, which is now a frontage road to I-40, and couldn't get back on the freeway, so our choices were to keep going until we found an on-ramp, or turn around and go back the way we came. Matthew decided to see what lay over the hill, and to his credit, we ended up finding the place. The dish we were there to try was the Laguna Burger, which was a classic New Mexican cheese burger with green chilies. My dad and Matthew liked it, but the boys and my mom found it too spicy, and it was a bit greasy for my taste. The onion rings were good though.

My parents spent the night at our house, and ended up spending most of Thursday with us before heading back up to Santa Fe. My mom graded papers while Dad watched a show with the kids. Then Abraham, Mercy, Mom, and I went shopping. The goal was to get Matthew some jeans without holes in the knees. He wears a 33/36, which is a practically impossible size to find in stores. We did find a few pairs of 34/36 and bought those, but I ended up getting the wrong style, so we'll have to return them and he's still without pants. Grandma got some clothes for the boys though, and we had a nice lunch at Panera, so the trip wasn't entirely fruitless.

On Friday after Matthew and Hyrum got home, the five of us drove up to Santa Fe and met Grandma and Grandpa at a pizza place for dinner. The food wasn't terrible, but certainly didn't meet our expectations for pizza cooked in a wood burning oven at a restaurant with such high costumer reviews. My mom had booked us a room for the night, and the boys were super excited to stay in a hotel. Unfortunately, the room reserved for us was for two adults only, with just one full size bed, a small love seat, and no extra blankets or pillows. I assumed we'd have a room with two beds, so I didn't pack the boys sleeping bags or blankets. At least Mercy had her pack-n-play. Abraham slept on the floor with his little brown blanket and the flat sheet from our bed. Hyrum went from the floor to the couch, then back to the floor, and finally wound up in bed next to me. It wasn't even a queen though, so I eventually got elbowed out and spent the last several hours of the night blanket-less on the couch. Needless to say, everyone woke up a bit grumpy, though the kids did enjoy eating sweet rolls and watching Mickey Mouse Club House in Spanish.

We met up with Grandma and Grandpa at the Santa Fe Convention Center and spent about an hour at a Japanese festival going on there. Abraham said he wasn't feeling good, crawled into the stroller, and spent the rest of the day there. Mercy did a commendable job walking all over town as we visited some old churches and poked in and out of shops. We ate lunch in a little cafe, and had planned on going to a bug museum inside a curiosity shop, but Abraham really wasn't doing well so we decided to call it a day.

We drove home on the Turquoise Trail, which was a fun, more scenic route back to Albuquerque. It was enjoyable to get out of town for a day and nice to do it with my parents. We are grateful for the experience.
