The Great Calm: Week Four

Sunday: The morning went smoothly, and the boys were reasonably well behaved at church. Mercy, on the other hand, was super grumpy and got taken out during the Sacrament hymn. She fell asleep on the couch in the foyer about 20 minutes before the end of the meeting. She slept for maybe half an hour and woke up all smiles and happiness. For our main Sunday meal we had carrot soup, fresh bread, and strawberries. After lunch all five of us napped and it was lovely. We Skyped with Grandma Naomi and Grandpa Kip, had a hodge podge of whatever was in the fridge for dinner, and the kids ran around the now empty front room playing super heroes.

Monday: Matthew spent the entire day preparing for his interview. My first order of business for the day was to mow the lawn. It didn't end up being much cooler at 9 in the morning than it was last week at 2 in the afternoon. After a cold shower, I listened to Matthew practice his presentation in case he gets to give it during his interview. Then lunch, dishes, and general cleaning up. While Mercy napped, I went grocery shopping where I stuck my toe into the wide world of couponing. In the afternoon the boys and I went to the library. For dinner we had turkey dogs and salad. For Family Night we redeemed some coupons for free mini blizzards that the boys got for their summer reading program and watched Popeye (one of Robin Williams' first movies, made in 1980, which was about as awesome as it sounds).

Tuesday: The kids and I went to aerobics then Moms&Tots (which was just playing in the church gym because the planned picnic at the park got rained out). After lunch and a shower, I listened to Matthew's presentation one more time. It was still cloudy, but no longer raining, so we made an attempt at taking some family pictures. It didn't go great, but I guess it's something. I played with the kids outside for a while, we made a family trip to Meijer, then had pan fried chicken sandwiches and salad for dinner. Matthew spent the evening packing and the boys took a long "playing bath" before bed.

Wednesday: We left at 6:00 am to take Matthew to the airport. I woke up feverish and not feeling well, so Netflix babysat the boys while Mercy and I napped. Little kid Matthew came calling for the boys some time after lunch and they spent a good part of the afternoon playing outside. We had hot dogs and fruit salad for dinner then went on a little walk in order to keep Abraham from falling asleep too early. The boys walked for about a block, then decided it was too hot and they were too tired, so I ended up pushing nearly 100 lbs of kids+stroller another couple of blocks. It was hot, and I was tired, so we quickly gave up the idea and returned home after maybe ten minutes. Mercy got a quick bath, then Abraham took a longer one, and Hyrum played computer. The boys asked if they could sleep on the floor downstairs, and I agreed so long as they were quiet and went right to bed. They were remarkably prompt and obedient during the bathroom part of the bedtime routine, quiet during scriptures and prayers, and were fast asleep by 8:30 pm. I was able to talk with Matthew a bit. He arrived safely in Albuquerque, attended a session at the Temple, and ate part of a rather disappointing hamburger for dinner.

Thursday: Today was a long day. I was anxious to hear how Matthew's interviews went and with grumpy kids it felt like bed time might never arrive. It did though, and the interviews went well. Now it's back to the waiting game.

Friday: I told the boys this morning that it was a working day and that they couldn't play outside or do anything else until their room was clean. They therefore stayed in their room from 9:00 am until nearly 3:00 pm. They always get along and play together so well when there's something else they're supposed to be doing instead. Mercy went back and forth between the boys' room and wherever I was, and when she wasn't under my feet I was able to get all the floors in the house cleaned. I also did some generic picking up as well as striping the cloth diapers. During her nap I sanded molding for a while. Once their room was cleaned, we all spent a couple hours outside. We left at 5:30 to pick Matthew up from the airport. Mercy cried the entire drive there and most of the drive home, but Matthew got some hamburgers for us to eat in the car and the boys thought that was pretty great. The Boys all watched some Avengers when we got home, then we sat in the back yard for a few minutes to watch the fireflies come out before finally getting them to bed at 10:00 pm.

Saturday: Breakfast was pretty much all we accomplished before lunch. The boys spent a good part of the day making bear caves out of couch cushions and Matthew and I got some sanding done while Mercy napped. Matthew wanted a party and spent some time searching for coupons for things like Doritos and soda pop. I thought perhaps he just needed a proper meal after all his traveling and eating out, so I made us pan roasted chicken breasts with sweet-tart red wine sauce, fresh whole wheat bread, and sliced radishes, with peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for dessert. After dinner all three kids had some good ol' fashioned wrestle mania time with Dad, and then the Boys watch some Avengers while I ran to Meijer and Pay Less (having already gone to Walmart earlier in the day) trying to use a WIC check. What a headache! But I got what I needed, the littles are all in bed, and so ends another week.
