Weekend Shenanigans

On Friday morning, while the kids worked on chores, I rode 48 miles on the trainer. My goal was 45, but I was really close to leveling up, so I rode until I did. Why I didn't just ride two more miles to make it an even 50, I don't know. I'm trying to get some serious time in the saddle as I work towards another century race, and I've actually quite enjoyed these long rides. I'm also participating in the Tour de Zwift and have done two big groups rides so far, which really push me to ride harder than I would on my own.

While I was riding, Matthew prepared the ground under the pavilion and started laying bricks. I came out after lunch and the boys and I helped haul bricks from the piles by the shed over to where Matthew was working. We made a good team and had all the whole bricks down by around 5:00 pm. He still needs to cut the ones that go around the posts and some half bricks around the border, but otherwise the base is just about done!

In the evening, we grilled hamburgers, cooked fries in the fryer, and made milkshakes, which we enjoyed while watching our new Friday night show, Wandavision. Afterwards, we played Dragon Quest for a while.

We mucked around Saturday morning, playing and working on odd jobs. In the afternoon I tried my hand at old fashioned cake doughnuts. They were good, but very rich and heavy. The kids had a hard time finishing one, and no one was able to manage seconds. We ended up giving the rest to the Jolley's. Hyrum discovered a new video game, Kingdom, and Matthew sat down to play after dinner. He and I got sucked in, as it was a tricky strategy game, and ended up staying up until 2:00 am trying to figure it out. This was very uncharacteristic (for me anyway) but it was fun to spend the time together.

When the Sandia doctor called on Monday to verify that Matthew could to return to work, she was concerned by some symptoms he was still experiencing and put him on quarantine for another week. Since he couldn't go to work, we decided it was probably best that we didn't go to church either, so we stayed home on Sunday and watched the live stream of Sacrament Meeting on Youtube. Abraham and Mercy had virtual primary afterwards, and Hyrum had a virtual ward youth fireside in the evening. After dinner, we all sat down together to try and beat Kingdom. We managed it in about an hour with a strategy Matthew had been coming up with all day. It was very satisfying.
