I had July's weekends all scheduled out at the beginning of the summer, but this and that happened and our July became a much more relaxed month than we had originally anticipated. We had a pretty solid morning routine of swim team, music practice, and park lunch, and at least a couple times a week we brought friends home with us afterwards. Monday's we usually went to the library and we tried to do fun things with dad on his Friday's off. We had a lovely, low key Fourth of July here at home, and Matthew spent a week in Nevada on his last WIP trip. Highlights of the month include a swim meet for Hyrum, an Isotopes baseball game, and the discovery of a hole drilled through our AC's coolant line. Matthew also finished up the wood rack on the back of the shed, and we've cleaned up and organized a lot inside the house. We did end up skipping out on a trip to Utah, a weekend camping, and my high school reunion, but after the intensity of June, a few weeks at home were not entirely unwelcome. Summer weather took a little longer than usual to set in, but once it did, it was HOT and nobody was all that interested in doing much of anything.
Mission Prep:
Matthew and I went to the Temple together again this month. I feel like we've been more consistent with our family Come, Follow Me study as well as with Family Home Evening. My personal study is going well, and we've all made the commitment to improve our personal prayers. In addition, the kids have been doing their own personal scripture study more consistently and as a result there has been overall less contention and the Spirit has been felt in our home more abundantly.
My health and fitness journey this month has been a bit rockier than my spiritual one. I struggled in June and was not happy with where I found myself at the beginning of this month. I felt like I needed a better workout routine, and committed myself to counting calories again. I started on the second week of the month doing Rip 60, a pretty intense hour long workout combining body weight strength exercises with cardio. The program gets progressively harder each week, and I was also eating a calorie deficit, aiming for 1,000 to 1,100 calories a day. I did this for three weeks and felt awful the entire time. I was tired, grumpy, and had a perpetual headache. After week three, we decided to call it quits. Matthew and I have both been reading up and I've since learned a lot about the physiology of exercise and how the body uses nutrients to function and improve. He started weight training before me, but now we are both focused on building muscle and getting strong. He's doing a program called Starting Strength and is in a bulking phase. I'm doing Thinner, Leaner, Stronger and am still cutting, but am aiming for 1,260 calories a day. Eating more and focusing on the macro nutrients (20% fat, 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates) has made a huge difference in how I feel, and I can already see changes in my physique from the lifting. I'm much happier with this course of action and think it will be good for both of us. We've also been going on walks nearly every evening. This has been a nice supplemental source of exercise, but has also been good for our relationship. Sometimes the kids join us, and that's been fun too.
