Spring Break Days 6-7

This weekend was not only part of spring break, but Easter weekend and General Conference weekend as well. In order to accommodate watching the morning session, karate was moved to 8:30 am. While the boys were in class, the girls all went to Smiths to take advantage of some Saturday only deals. Matthew and Grandpa continued their work on the shed, while the rest of us watched the morning and afternoon sessions. I made a yummy salsa with black beans, corn, red onion, cilantro, and three different colored bell peppers for us to snack on for lunch, and between sessions we went on a walk.

At 5:30 pm Sarah and I met at Hannah's house and carpooled with her and Lorelle to the Balloon Fiesta park where we participated in the Albuquerque 5K Foam Glow. We danced around getting sporadically sprayed with colored foam while waiting for the rest our friends to arrive. There ended up being 7 of us: Hannah, Lorelle, Nicole, Victoria, Hannah's friend from work, me, and Sarah. This was my first 5K and the running part was actually easier and funner than I anticipated. The course was flat, unlike the trails I trained on, so that was nice, and running with friends makes the time pass so much faster. There were stations where we ran through more glowing foam and black lights, which was less fun than I anticipated. Mostly it just made our feet wet. We jogged at a rather leisurely pace and did the race in about 40 minutes, running almost the entire time. There was an after race dance party involving a LOT more foam, black lights, and loud thumping music. It was fun for a while, and made me feel like a teenager again, but then the wet feet and pounding beat reminded us that we were not teenagers and we made our exit just a little after 9:00 pm. We all met up at Sonic afterwards for 1/2 price shakes and the whole evening was definitely an experience for the books.

Easter Sunday was lovely. The kids got up, looked through their baskets, and searched for the plastic eggs filled with candy that Grandma and Grandpa hid around the house for me while I was at the race. We had a big breakfast with pancakes, sausage, baked ham & swiss sliders, and fruit, then settled in for the morning session of conference. We snacked on artichoke dip and artisan bread during the second session, then took a walk afterwards to get out all our wiggles. This General Conference was a memorable one. President Russel M. Nelson was sustained as the new prophet, with Elder Oaks as first councilor and Elder Eyring as second. Two new apostles were also called, Elder Gong and Elder Soares. During the priesthood session, President Nelson announced that there will no longer be High Priest groups and that all Elders and High Priests will now meet together as one quorum. During the Saturday afternoon session, President Nelson announced changes to Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching, taking away the names and reporting structure. He also announced seven new temples, including ones in India and Russia.
