Week in Review

I think we're settling into a solid weekday schedule that looks like it will serve us well this school year. I get up at 6:30 am and do my personal scripture study. I make the boys get up by 7:15 so they can shower, practice piano, and have a bit of breakfast. We have family prayer and recite a scripture, then the boys leave for the bus at 8:30. Mercy has been taking a bath almost every morning and lets me comb and style her hair, which she keeps done at least until she's home from school. The time between when the boys leave and Mindy picks up Mercy around 10:50 is mostly spent doing chores since that's my most productive time of day. Mercy is usually very anxious to get going and spends most of her morning completely ready and just waiting for time to pass.

Once Mercy leaves, I work on personal development goals, like exercising, piano practice, sewing, and tap dancing. I leave at 1:40 to pick up Mercy and Riker. We're usually home a little after 2:00 and have just enough time for a popsicle outside before Mindy arrives. About half the time she comes with Scott so he can practice piano. It's during this afternoon period that I work on dinner prep and clean up the kitchen. It's also probably when I'm most prone to seek out down time by reading or sometimes catching a quick 20 minute nap. At 3:50 I prepare a snack for the kids, then wait by the door for the boys to walk in right around 4:00 pm. I've loved being right there to welcome them the moment they return home. I put my phone away and sit with them at the table for about 20 minutes while they eat and tell me about their day. At 4:30 we start homework and finish whatever piano they didn't get done in the morning, then dinner, then time to play. We're trying out only having screen time on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday afternoon (their early release day). Most days they choose to spend their free time outside on the trampoline. Around 7:00 we do family scripture study. Right now we're reading through the Book of Mormon, each person reading 1 verse, then briefly discussing what happened in the five or ten verses we covered. It's gong really well. After family prayer, we aim for kids in bed around 7:30. I usually go to bed around 10:00 pm and find that the hours before then are not my most productive.

Matthew's toe kept him home all week. He was still taking quite a lot of pain medicine during the first part of the week which made him a bit loopy and unable to work. He fiddled around with his 3D printer, the CNC machine, and an electric guitar kit while finding ways to keep his foot elevated. He was able to work from home half the day on Wednesday, and all day Thursday and Friday.

Highlights from this week include the solar eclipse on Monday. It was pretty cloudy, which is not the norm here in New Mexico and at first was rather disheartening. But we stood outside anyway hoping to catch what we could of what was for us only a partial eclipse. It turned out that we could often see it through the clouds just with our bare eyes, which was really very cool. The clouds did eventually part and we could use the special glasses to see it waning. Matthew was able to get us a view of it through his telescope, which was also pretty neat. Mindy and Dave joined us for the majority of this rare experience.

I went on a walk with a sister I visit teach on Monday evening, met with another sister to plan decorations for an upcoming ward activity on Tuesday evening, took Hyrum to his Cub Scout Pack Meeting on Wednesday evening, walked with Hannah and Susan on Thursday evening, and took the kids to the park to play with the Brown's on Friday evening.

Today we went as a family to Jackson Wilson's birthday party from 11-12:30, then I took Hyrum to Harry Jolley's birthday party at 1:30. I ran some errands, then picked Hyrum back up at 4:00 pm. Matthew carpooled with his friends to play D&D and once the kids were in bed, I spent the evening watching one of my favorite floof movies, Decoy Bride, and cutting out flyers to put in the ward bulletin tomorrow.
