Week in Review

The plan for this year is to have the boys up by 7:00 am. One will shower, dress, and eat while the other practices piano for 30 minutes. Then they switch. Hopefully this will cut down on business and stress after school, and help them smell better. In theory it's a win win for everyone. We'll see how it goes.

On Monday, the first day of school, everyone was up by 6:30 am. We had no problem getting through showers and piano and breakfast and even some free time before taking pictures and walking the boys to the bus stop. The bus routes were switched up a bit and they don't have to leave the house until 8:30 this year, which feels like oodles of time to get stuff done in the mornings. They have the same driver as last year, which pleases me. We got the boys off with hardly more than a wave over their shoulder, then Mercy had over two tedious hours to wait until it was her turn leave. I let her pass the time by watching a show while I did an indoor ride on the trainer and showered. By 10:00 am she was itching to go anywhere, so we made a quick trip to Walmart for a few groceries. Mindy picked us up a bit before 11:00 and we all rode over to Helen Cordero together. Dropping her off was rather anticlimactic and before we knew it, Mindy and I were free birds. We went together to the Baking Shop, then had lunch at the Olive Garden. She dropped me off and I just sat and basked in the silence for about 20 minutes before I had to go pick them up. While collecting Mercy and Riker after school is not nearly as easy as dropping them off would be, it's still so much less bothersome without a 2 year old in tow. Plus, carpooling with Mindy means I only have to go to the school once a day which, again, is so much nicer than when Abraham was in pre-k. I got them home easily enough, gave them popsicles, then Mindy was there with Scott to play piano. He practiced for nearly an hour, then Mercy napped for an hour and before we knew it my boys got home. They had no homework and their piano practicing was already done, so the afternoon went by much more pleasantly than I anticipated. We had an early Family Night then Matthew took Hyrum to Home Teach the Armstrong's. I'd say it was definitely a successful first day back to school.

Tuesday Morning's showers and piano went almost as well as Monday, except they bathed quicker than they practiced and there was some argument over who got to use the piano with a computer (and thus access to Musiah). After the boys were off to school, Mercy and I ran to Sprouts. We had about 45 minutes before it was time for her to go to school, but she didn't want to be home, so we walked up to the Jolley's. Mindy took the kids to school and I walked home. During my kid-less time, I practiced piano, did some clog dancing, and also did a few chores. It was fantastic! Pick up again went well, Scott played piano, and again Mercy napped in the afternoon. Hyrum had a bit of a melt down within half an hour of getting home, but that's to be expected to some degree during the first few days and weeks of a new schedule. Tuesday night Matthew hosted his book club.

Wednesday was Mercy's day off, which she was not thrilled about. To make matters worse, I wouldn't let her watch a show until she picked up her room, so her morning was mostly spent napping by default. I, on the other hand, had a lovely morning baking a cake for my book club that evening. It was a reverse marble (chocolate base and yellow layers) with a milk chocolate ganache frosting. My book club ladies said they loved it, but I thought it was only okay. It had a nice flavor, not too sweet, but it was a bit dryer and more crumbly than I would have liked. Matthew also moved a little used computer from upstairs down to the other piano, so now both boys can do Musiah at the same time.

Hannah and I had tentatively planned a bike ride for Thursday morning. She ended up having other things to get done and Matthew decided to work from home, so I went on a ride by myself. The weather was glorious, the ride was just my pace, and over all it was perfect. I came home and showered, then practiced piano and clogging, and did a few chores while Mercy was at school. The boys still didn't have any homework beyond the standard 20 minutes of reading, so we had another reasonably peaceful afternoon.

Friday was Matthew's day off. He hurt his shoulder helping a family move and the doctor told him to take it easy for a couple weeks, so we weren't able to work on the front room at all. Instead he worked on cleaning his garage and started building his CNC machine. We did our morning routine, Mercy's school, and Scott's piano. I had plans for a girl's night with Mindy and Hannah, but before I left Matthew took Abraham to Home Depot for some supplies. Someone had put an iron bar in a stack of PVC and when Matthew pulled out a pipe the rod fell out, crushing the second toe on his right foot. He thought for sure it was broken and it was a wonder he got home on his own considering how much pain he was in. We immediately loaded the kids in the car and dropped them off at Mindy's, then I took Matthew up to the ER at the Lovelace hospital in Rio Rancho. The doctor was unceremoniously not gentle in cleaning the wound and ordered an x-ray. He didn't need stitches and it wasn't in fact broken, so a nurse gave him a tetanus shot and a band-aid, then discharged us without any further information or instructions. Matthew was twitching uncontrollably in pain and could barely get himself from the bed to a wheelchair, so I thought it was a little short-sighted not to give us some medication advice, but I suppose since he wasn't an emergency, they weren't all that worried about him. We paid our $500 deductible and were on our way after just 90 minutes.
