Grandma J's Spring Break

Grandma J had Spring Break this past week and came to spend it with us. She arrived around 9:00 pm last Friday. Since the boys would be in school for the bulk of her visit, we tried to pack in as much as we could on Saturday. We got up and had pancakes for breakfast, then went to REI where Grandma gifted Mercy with a little girl sized hiking backpack. Abraham got one as well, paid for by mom and dad. We had originally planned them as birthday/Easter presents, but since the kids were there and had them in hand, we let them use their new packs right away. After REI we went to JoAnn's. My mom's main goal for the week was to work on a quilt she had started for Jennifer nearly 14 years ago, so we stopped by the craft store for a few supplies she needed. Flannel was 60% off plus I had a 20% off total purchase coupon, so I bought some fabric to finish up a few projects in the works. Next we popped into Sprouts to stock up on produce and then went to Panera for lunch.

In the afternoon we did a roughly two mile hike around the Petroglyphs. It was a fun little walk that we haven't done before and everyone did a great job.

This is my Mom's last year teaching at D'Evelyn. She's been there 21 years and has been collecting stuffed jaguars (the school's mascot) the entire time. Since she's nearing retirement, she brought all those jaguars to give to Mercy. They are the perfect collection for Mercy's favorite pastime: playing family.

After church on Sunday we spent a couple hours watching the previous night's broadcast of the Women's Session of General Conference and sewing up holes in the aforementioned jaguars. The majority of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were spent quilting. Having a project like this was a great way for my Mom and I to spend some time together. Monday of course we had Family night. Tuesday evening the boys had swimming lessons and afterwards I attended a session at the Temple with our ward council in preparation for Ward Conference in two weeks. I tended Gabriel on Wednesday, the kids finished watching Moana that afternoon, and in the evening we went to Pack Meeting. Thursday was the boys' last swimming lesson for this session. We were very pleased with their assessment results. Hyrum got full marks and is cleared to move to pod 2, and Abraham squeaked by with 6/11 stars and is also clear to move to the next level. After their assessment, they got to swim in the play pool and both spent the entire time going down the slide.

Grandma needed some more thread to finish up the applique on her quilt, so she, Mercy, and I went to JoAnn's again this morning. I found out what colors I needed for a baby shower gift, so I picked those up as well. We then parked in Old Town and looked for a shop my mom wanted to stop by. She then took us to lunch at the quesadilla place we ate at the last time she was here. Mercy completely enjoyed our girl's morning out and was an absolute doll the entire time.

My mom stayed up late and was able come pretty close to finishing the top of her quilt. She still needs to do some French knots in the center of each flower and add some hand stitched embellishments, but all the piecing and applique is done.

It was fun to get a project done and the kids always love having extended family in town. We're glad Grandma J was able to come spend her break with us.
