The Goal for 2017

While at the Temple back in October, I had a very distinct impression of what my goal for this year should be: have Family Home Evening every week and keep a record of what we do. From the very beginning of our marriage Matthew and I have made a point of having Family Night and certainly compared to my experience growing up, have done a remarkable job of being regular and consistent. Our kids love Family Night and look forward to it all week long, so this was not an area I'd considered needed much improvement. The impression was very clear to me though, especially the part about documenting it, so I will make it my priority for the year and look forward to seeing how we are blessed as we more conscientiously spend time together as a family.

In addition, I'd like to add a greater emphasis on a focused monthly fast. Fasting, for 24 hours, along with purposeful prayer, is not something I ever really did until I got married. I fasted as a teenager and in college, but all it really entailed was a lack of breakfast on Sunday morning. There have been times in my life when I could have been strengthened by a solid, humble fast, and I've felt the blessings of fasting as I've learned more about it as an adult. Hyrum is now eight and I want him to grow up knowing about this power. There are so many temptations and distractions all around us, and I think we all could use more of the strength and focus that comes from a faithful, dedicated fast.
