Saturday Snapshots

This morning we worked on Mercy's room. I picked up, organized her doll things, and removed the clothes she's out grown from her drawers. Matthew spent hours cleaning up the glass from the outer pane of her window that got shattered over a year ago. We tried fixing her blinds, which the boys broke not long after we moved in, but were unsuccessful. Now I need to make her some curtains and come up with a way to manage all her stuffed friends.

In the afternoon I went on my first solo bike ride outside. I rode 21 miles from our house up Unser to the Volcanoes and back. Not quite half way through I attempted to push off with my non-dominant leg and ended up falling over. As a result, my right leg got gouged pretty good by the gears. It definitely hurt, but I had no idea how bad it was until I got home and cleaned up. The bottom three gashes are pretty deep and required neosporin and a bandage. Despite my flesh wound, I was really pleased with my ride. I averaged nearly 12 miles an hour, which is not good enough for the Century, but definitely an improvement from when I started. Plus, I rode alone on a busy road, which speaks volumes about my confidence level. On Monday I start a more strict training regiment. 12 weeks of sweet spot base training, then 8 weeks of sustained power building, then a final 8 weeks of century specific training leading up to the big race at the end of September.

In the evening we walked across the street to the Sena's, who prepared a full New Mexican feast for us. Mary Rose made Frito pie, with a red and a green chili, enchiladas, rice, and beans. She even made some plain cheese enchiladas for the kids, and girdle buster (which she called yum yum cake) for dessert. The kids behaved well and it was an enjoyable evening. After the kids were in bed, Matthew's friends came over to play D&D at our house.

I am so proud of your commitment to biking! That is one impressive case of road rash, my friend!
