Easter Sunday

Easter was rather under-represented this year. With house guests and work trips, and having been under the weather so much this past month, I just didn't didn't put much thought or effort into the holiday. Grandma Naomi supplied the bulk of the kids' baskets, and I supplemented them a bit. The boys each got a pack of fun socks, Mercy got a dress, and everyone got new shoes. We also recognized that Easter isn't about candy and presents and spent some time reading scriptures and discussing the great gift of Jesus Christ and the resurrection.

After going through their baskets, they were too full of candy to enjoy the french toast, strawberries, and bacon I prepared for breakfast. We then spent the morning building one of Matthew's old Lego models. Since he didn't eat any real food, it didn't take long for Abraham to decide he was hungry. So making use of all his little boy logic he laid himself a candy picnic and ate himself sick a second time.

While they were feeling much improved, Abraham and Mercy were still projectile sneezing and steadily oozing nose fluids so they stayed home from church. Matthew had to lead the children in a special musical number, so he went to Sacrament meeting then came home and traded with me so I could be there for primary. I asked Sister Dixie, Hyrum's primary teacher, if she had somewhere to go for Easter dinner and in response to her negative answer invited her to eat with us. We had hamburgers with homemade bacon guacamole, grape and strawberry salad, and chips, with ice cream for dessert. Hyrum came to life in her presence and was lively and talkative through the whole meal. While I cleaned up, she told me stories of her pioneer ancestors and of her own experiences as a young Stanford student studying abroad in Germany in 1961. The boys rode with me to take her home, and upon returning to our house we were able to Skype with Matthew's parents. Since it's spring break this coming week, we let all three kids have a slumber party in Hyrum's room. It turned out to be a perfectly lovely way to spend our Easter Sunday.
