Despite the fact that he usually gets up around 6:45 am, Hyrum is not much of a morning person. It takes him quite a while to get moving, and I don't think he fully wakes up until around 10:00. This morning he just sat and stared over his breakfast for a solid five minutes before even touching a bit of it. I'm pretty sure Abraham had eaten and was off to something else before Hyrum even took his first bite.
After getting Hyrum off to school and bathing Mercy, the kids entertained themselves while I got myself ready and finalized my grocery list.
We all got loaded into the van to go shopping and as I put the car in gear to pull out of the driveway Mercy cried out. I asked her what was wrong and she folded her arms and said pray. Apparently we've said morning prayer in the car enough times to convince our children that we need pray every time we go somewhere. That's fine with me, so I asked Abraham to say a prayer for us. He did and I again put the car in reverse. Mercy cried out again, folded her arms, and said pray. I asked if she wanted to say the prayer, to which she responded with a huge grin. She proceeded to bow her head, say something that sounded a bit like Heavenly Father, and then baby talked her way through her very first prayer. When she stopped babbling, we said amen and were clear to be on our way.
After a lunch consisting mostly of the fresh fruit we bought at Sprouts, the kids went into their rooms for quiet time and I worked on sewing some drapes for a lady in our ward. We left a bit early to pick Hyrum up from the bus stop so the kids could enjoy the sunshine and fresh air at the park for a while. Pants are totally optional when you are two, right?
Mercy was so excited when she saw her brother get off the bus, and ran to him calling out his name, which sounds something like hi-wo. I can't say he's been any nicer to her than usual, but lately she has been a bit obsessed with her oldest brother. She insisted on holding his hand all the way home, which he patiently consented to allow even though he was totally stressed out that Abraham would beat him home and get to open the door first.
As soon as he got home, Hyrum changed out of his school clothes, put on his kid-size apron from Home Depot, and asked if Dad was home yet so they could go work in the garage. I reminded him that Dad wouldn't be home for almost an hour, so he resigned himself to jumping on the trampoline with his siblings. He and his brother got a little rough with each other and Abraham ended up accidentally kicking Hyrum in the mouth, causing his loose tooth to come out. Even after getting him settled down and cleaned up, he was still feeling a bit traumatized and asked to wait by the front window until Dad got home.
He wanted to build a box to put his tooth in, and that the Tooth Fairy could then leave his treasure in, which Matthew said he'd help him with. So after our dinner of Greek salad, pitas, and hummus, the boys all went into the garage to work. It is not a Mercy friendly environment though, so she and I sat on the couch playing with moose, reading Dr. Seuss' ABC book, and taking selfies with my phone. I'm amazed at how long she stayed entertained.
Just before 7 pm both boys came in crying. Turns out they started fighting over a hammer and Matthew said they were done for the night. We read scriptures, said our night time prayer, and put the kids to bed. Matthew wasn't feeling great, so he and I watched the most recent installment of a documentary about a kick-starter computer game that Matthew donated to, then went to bed ourselves. As I was saying my own evening prayer, going over all the events of the day and feeling grateful for the absolutely love life I'm living, I recalled Hyrum's tooth trauma and we thankfully remembered to switch out his baby tooth for a little bag of change before calling it a night.
