This month's Cub Scout pack meeting was the Blue and Gold Banquet, in celebration of the birthday of scouting. Matthew did a better job planning this activity, but the execution of those plans were only set in motion a few days in advance. We started making the pinatas on Saturday and I spent most of Monday and Tuesday pulling everything together. I made a poster, a banner, a blindfold, dessert competition entry cards, wrapped prizes for the games, and cooked up a batch of caramel popcorn, not to mention sewing all the patches onto Matthew's shirt. We ate a quick dinner last night and got to the church with a little over an hour to set up. If I had had a better picture of Matthew's vision in mind, I would have done more to help the event feel more banquet-y, but despite the lack of decor I think Matthew put on a really fun party. There was a coloring station, carnival games, pinatas, and a dessert buffet. Participants got raffle tickets for playing the games and we drew names for the grand prizes, plus there was a prize for the best looking dessert. There was an Arrow of Light ceremony as well as a Crossing Over (into Boy Scouts) ceremony, and that was a nice way to end the evening. There was more to clean up after this pack meeting, so the kids didn't get to bed until almost 9:30 pm, but they had been looking forward to it for weeks and had so much fun that the late night ended up being a reasonable price to pay.
I hope Matthew keeps this calling for at least two years so we can learn from our experiences and do an even better job next time around (like having only one pinata and letting people get dessert while collecting tickets).

I am happy that Matthew is still involved in Scouting. My grandfather was a scout master and served on the county council where I am from in IL. Also, I think my cousin Dana's son has probably made Eagle Scout by now.
