Hyrum had been looking forward to his birthday for months. He started asking how many more days back in July, so I told him that his birthday happens when it snows (intending to imply that it had to get cold before he could start counting down the days). This meant that on the first snow of the season, he was sure it was his birthday. He eventually understood when his special day was in relation to all the other celebrations during December, but was still convinced that it was going to snow on his birthday. Poor guy was sorely disappointed that it was a bright sunny day. The pile of presents waiting for him downstairs cheered him up though...
He got a firefighter GI Joe, some awesome wood block kits, Spiderman underwear, a coloring/activity book, some spy glasses, and his own bow and arrows (the one thing he really wanted and was so excited about).
He had been telling me for several weeks before hand what we were going to eat on his birthday. It was quite the smorgasbord by the time we actually got to the big day. I picked from the long list of treats what I thought he'd actually like best, and made crepes and whipped cream for breakfast. Normally the boys ask for seconds and thirds and fourths until the entire plate is gone, but this morning they each only ate one pancake. Abraham had started feeling sick Christmas evening, and by today nobody was feeling their best. We decided not to go on a big family outing, though Hyrum did run to the grocery store with me and got a free cookie. The day was mostly spent playing with his toys and watching shows.
When I double checked what he wanted for his birthday dinner, he requested fried chicken and french fries. While we cheated a bit and did chicken from a bag, Matthew did spend a large portion of the afternoon making homemade fries. The boys only ate a few bites. Hyrum was very specific about what he wanted in a birthday cake. It was to have black and white stripes on the inside, and have black stripes on the outside. We researched recipes and techniques and I made him a zebra cake, covered with cream cheese frosting, and striped with a chocolate ganache. It was tasty, but not what he had in mind. He was very polite, said thank you, and ate it, but I could tell he was disappointed. Probably next year I'll go for show.
My big 5 year old is such a sweet boy. I can't believe 1/4 of my time with him at home under my wing is already past. He is interested in learning and is growing in so many ways. He can be so helpful and generous, and so funny. I love him dearly and am so glad he is my first born.
a few out-takes from the day
