Many months ago, my mom invited me to spend a week with her in Sedona, AZ. It was only a 5.5 hour drive, which wasn't too bad by myself, and I met up with her at the resort around 4:30 pm on Saturday. We got all sorted, then went out in search of some supper. We ended up at a Thai restaurant and I had a delicious duck curry.
On Sunday we went to church, ate leftovers for lunch, napped, played a round of mini golf, and went to a lecture (of sorts) about the area's vortexes.
On Monday we hiked the Soldiers Pass Trail, which passes a giant sinkhole, the seven sacred pools, and then takes you up the side of the mesa where you can connect with another trail that makes a loop along the ridge.
It took us a lot of time and effort to get to the top and my mom didn't think she was up for the extra miles of the loop, so we decided to turn around. We had missed the spur trail to the Soldiers Pass cave on the way up, which was a main feature of the hike, so a benefit of making it an out and back was that we were able to catch the spur on our way down. It was quite a scramble to get up to the actual cave, but it was worth the effort and we spent a good long time there resting up.
I didn't think I was picking a particularly difficult trail, but it was definitely out of my mom's comfort zone. She was slow and steady and determined, however, and she did it, which was a meaningful accomplishment! I didn't mind our pace too much because the scenery was incredible and the weather divine. It really was the perfect day for a hike.
