We had our seminary kickoff fireside on Sunday evening. We have a really great group of kids and I'm super excited to start another year of early morning scripture study with these youth.
My birthday was super low key and really lovely. I went to the gym in the morning while Abraham had his 6th grade jump start, then in the afternoon Mercy and I went across the street to meet her teacher. I played a couple board games with the kids, and assembled my birthday dessert. Matthew manned the smoker and spent many, many hours working on plans for the jump ring cutter. In the evening the Barrios, Mindy and Riker, and Kassidy and Kaden Brown came over for brisket and french fries. Mindy brought a delicious caprese salad and Cassie brought homemade french bread.
The boys made me this giraffe picture. While they did have a generous amount of help from dad, they came up with the idea and started working on it all on their own. It is one of my very favorite presents ever!
School started on Wednesday. Hyrum finally got onto the advanced math track, and ended up in leadership and yearbook for his electives, which he wasn't expecting but his initial opinion is positive. Abraham got into gifted math and english, and got band which is what he really wanted. He went into the first few days with a really upbeat attitude and so far so good! Mercy likes her teacher, Mr. Chavez, but doesn't have any established friendships in her class, so she's feeling a bit down about the social aspect of a new year.
Matthew and I had a relaxed morning together before he left for the UK for two weeks. We got him all packed up and finished filming the jump ring cutter video, then I took him to the airport.
The boys had just a few minutes to change as soon as they got home from school on Friday, then we dropped them off at the Walkers so they could go do baptisms at the temple. Mercy wanted to try the new strawberry frosty at Wendy's so we picked up dinner there and went home to eat. When the youth were done at the temple, we met up with them at a nearby park. Only a few minutes after they arrived, a monsoon storm moved in so fast we hardly had time to take cover. Sheets of water came down on us for about ten minutes, then it cleared out enough for them to enjoy an evening game of kickball.
The boys hadn't had time to eat before the temple, so once they were dried up after the park, we cuddled up with some ruzits and watched Captain America: Civil War. It was a late night to be sure, but it was fun to spend it focused on the kids, saying yes to everything they asked.
I had a seminary training meeting down at the stake center on Saturday morning, we did chores, and the boys went back to the park to play soccer in the evening. It was a pretty good Saturday, though we definitely miss dad. He made it safely to England and spent the weekend galavanting about London.
