Highlights Week 10

The kids helped me zest and squeeze lemons as part of my meal prep on Sunday morning. Dad had stake meetings in the evening, so we didn't see much of him after church, but we did enjoy a lemon upside down cake for our family night treat.

This week was a busy and fairly stressful one. I spent most of the days editing the jumpring winder video, and we had something going on all but one evening. Monday was our most relaxed day, and I took advantage of it to prepare a gourmet meal. We had elk steaks with buttered golden potatoes and a blueberry balsamic reduction, whole wheat bread with dark rye and flax seed, and fresh squeezed lemonade. It was really good.

I had a migraine in the middle of the day on Tuesday, which hasn't happened in ages. It only lasted about 5 hours, which is somewhat miraculous, and I was still able to get a bit of work done and make the pot pies Hyrum has been requesting for weeks. That evening, Matthew had a PPI down at the Stake Center, and while he was gone I took the kids to Walmart where we spent more than half the week's budget on shoes for everyone and a new swimsuit for Hyrum. With inflation added to how quickly these kids are growing, I feel like I can hardly keep up!

On Wednesday after school, we met up with the Brown's and did baptisms at the temple. Hyrum has gone several times now, so he's an old pro, but it was Cora's first time, which made the evening extra special. We all went out for frozen yogurt afterwards.

Hyrum decided he wanted to try out track, but needed a physical in order to join. It would have been easy peasy to get the paperwork filled out real quick if we hadn't had to cancel his well child check back in January when Matthew and I had Covid, but as it stood I needed to make an appointment with the pediatrician. I was worried we wouldn't be able to get in for months, but we were blessed with something of a miracle and were able to get an appointment the very next day after I called. I took Hyrum in first thing Thursday morning and we were super pleased with his growth chart. He's shot up over 5 inches since last year and is officially taller than his mama! His voice is deepening, his appetite is increasing, and all around it is clear he is turning into a proper young man. I knew it would happen some day, but back when I was changing diapers and calming down tantrums I sure didn't think it would happen this fast!

While I got half an hour with Hyrum in the morning, I got the rest of the day with Mercy. I kept her home sick because of a runny nose and slightly sore throat. I might have sent her to school in the past, but covid has made everyone more cautious these days. She wasn't so sick that she was stuck in bed all day, so she enjoyed a day of watching shows and playing with my old troll dolls. It was the very best kind of sick day. Hyrum had his first track practice after school followed by a parent meeting, Abraham had basketball, and Matthew had High Council down at the Stake Center, so it was a run around, eat what you can kind of evening.

I baked and ran errands on Friday while Matthew finished the plans for the ring winder. That evening we had the absolute privilege of attending Logan's baptism. He is one of my seminary students and family circumstances have prevented him from getting baptized. Yesterday was his 18th birthday and he was finally free to take this step on his own accord. I didn't get a picture, but it was a wonderful service and the Spirit bore special witness to me of the truthfulness of the Gospel and of God's deep love for all His children.

Matthew and I had a to-do list a mile long and tackled it as best we could all morning. The boys had a special combined youth activity from noon to 4pm that included a rock wall, volleyball, dodgeball, lots of food, and apparently some really intense rock-paper-scissors. While Hyrum was off at a multi-stake dance in the evening, the rest of us went over to the Sterling Brown's for dinner.
