Hyrum wasn't feeling well this time, so Matthew once again stayed home from church with a sick child. For our family night treat I made lemon soufflé with strawberry compote.
While Sunday was nice and relaxed, I feel like I hardly spent any time at home the rest of this past week. It was so busy!
Monday:
I was up at 5:45 for scriptures and journal, then Matthew and I went on our walk with Mabel. Swim team started this week, so at 7:45 we were on our way to the pool. I heard that Luci, Cora, Haley, and Olivia were doing it, so I signed all three kids up as well. As an added bonus, another family in the ward also got assigned to our time slot, so there are lots of friends to interact with! The boys did great and were very enthusiastic about it. Mercy has entirely forgotten that she knows how to swim and was extremely nervous. On Monday she was allowed to use a floaty vest and was in a lane on the end with just Olivia, so she had a much better time than expected. I got the kids home and started on their daily jobs, then headed out grocery shopping at 10:30. I swung by Truman Middle school for a multi-day pick up of school lunch, and was home around 12:30. I had enough time to put away all the food and eat a quick lunch, then I was out the door again for an orthodontist appointment. I came home again just long enough to collect the children. I dropped Mercy and Abraham off at Susan's to play, then Hyrum and I went to the Expo Center for his Covid booster shot. On the way home we stopped by Krispy Kreme for our free "I'm vaccinated" doughnuts. We got home around 4:00 and I went up to my room for a few minutes of quiet time. Hyrum was very excited that he was fully vaccinated (even though I explained to him SEVERAL times that he technically wouldn't be fully vaccinated for another two weeks) and he really wanted to go play with friends who have been extra cautious during the pandemic. I reminded him that even if his friends were willing to hang out, he needed to finish his math first and instructed him to go get to work. I came out of my room about 15 minutes later to find him gone. Matthew got home just about the same time and went out to look for him while I got dinner started. Turns out he decided he needed to go for a walk to "clear his head" and a friend's mom saw him and invited him over. She texted me to let me know Hyrum was at her house, so I let Matthew know and he promptly collected him. We were up until 10:00 pm finishing the math he was supposed to have done many hours earlier. It was a long day for sure!
Tuesday:
I was up at 5:45 for scriptures and journal, then Matthew and I went on our walk with Mabel. I offered to regularly pick up Haley and Olivia for swimming, since the Brown's are right on our way to the pool. On the second day of swim team, we were informed that floaties were not allowed, so Mercy spent the entire hour clinging to the side of the pool, alone in the far lane. The head coach spoke with me after and suggested that probably swimming lessons would be a better fit for her. I explained that she passed all the lessons back before Covid, but hasn't really been in a pool since and has lost all her confidence. I said we'd work with her and asked if he'd give her a week or two before kicking her out. The boys, on the other hand, worked really hard and are already improving. We had about 90 minutes at home to get some music and math done, then Cassie dropped Lucas off for us to tend while she focused on moving into their new house. We had him from 11 to 2:30, then as soon as Cassie picked him up, we headed across town to Cecilia's house. Cecilia is Hannah's sister and she has a pool. I texted and asked if we could come swim in hopes of helping Mercy. She was very kind to let us come over that very day, and the kids and I swam for about two hours. Mercy did great! She floated and kicked on her back and even managed a marginally successful doggy paddle.
Wednesday:
I was up at 5:45 for scriptures and journal, then Matthew and I went on our walk with Mabel. I was so proud of Mercy at swimming. While all the other kids in her age group worked on their various strokes, she floated on her back and kicked back and forth across the pool. She was alone in her far lane, and grabbed the wall a lot, but she worked hard the whole time and made a real effort. I spent our brief half hour at home after swimming talking to Violet, then Mercy and I left at 10:00 for speech therapy. After her session, we stopped by Tractor Supply for dog food, then Walmart for a couple items I forgot the day before, then swung by the play ground near Walmart to collect park lunch. That location is the closest to our house, and it's the park our friend Miss Rhonda is working this summer, but it's still close to a ten minute drive and since we're not allowed to stay and eat there, it hardly seems worth it to go every day. It was on our way home from errands though, so we stopped by. I did some meal prep for about an hour, then we went back to the Brown's to pick up Haley and Olivia. Cecilia invited us over to swim again, and said we could bring friends. When we arrived, Sako was also there which made Abraham very happy. Cecilia was so generous to invite us over a second time, and even served us a giant tray of sliced watermelon. They had so much fun, though Mercy spent the whole time reliant on the giant pool noodles and since Olivia was there to play with, she wasn't at all interested in working on real swimming. We got home at 5:15, and half an hour later the Barrios arrived for dinner. Having just moved in, their kitchen isn't all set up yet and I offered to feed them. Matthew wanted real tacos (not just seasoned ground meat in a tortilla) so I went all out and did a sous vide pork butt for carnitas. We had three different kinds of shells and all the toppings including Mexican crema, radishes, cotija cheese, fresh cilantro, limones, and red onion, in addition to the normal shredded lettuce, tomato, and salsa. They were delicious. They stayed and visited a while, but Hyrum and I had to leave at 6:45 for Young Men's. Hyrum hadn't quite finished his math time, so we had him try his unit test one more time before bed, and this time he finally passed it! Matthew and I then stayed up another hour to finish up the Beagle vs. Gate YouTube short.
Thursday:
Matthew kicked the door jam on his way out on Tuesday, and by this morning his little pinky toe was swollen and quite painful so we didn't go on our normal walk. The boys really worked hard at swimming again and felt awesome. I was a bit confused at Mercy though, because she seemed even more nervous than before and just sat in the corner again. I'm really not sure how swim team is going to pan out for her. We got home from swimming and I turned right around and went to collect Violet. It was my day to be her helper and she needed to run a couple errands. That took about an hour, then I was able to stop by for the multi-day meal pick up at Truman. Our plan was to leave for camping at 1pm, but I had a fair amount of meal prep to do before I'd be ready. We decided to scrap my cooking plans and instead use up the last of the dehydrated meals from last season. It made getting out the door about 90% easier and we were on our way to the mountains only half an hour later than anticipated.
