Summer Week 3

My attention this past week was divided fairly evenly between several organization projects upstairs and tending the puppy. Having Mabel is like having a newborn/toddler hybrid. She naps a lot like a brand new baby, but when she's awake she needs constant supervision like a two year old. She likes to eat the pea gravel from the play set area and likes to dig anywhere she sees landscape fabric. She still doesn't seem super interested in food, but she's learning to sit and the potty training, while not perfect, seems to be going reasonably well. The kids do a good job keeping her entertained for half an hour at a time and between the five of us, she gets plenty of love and attention.

On Monday I worked on organizing the bookshelves in the loft and pulled out several stacks that the kids are too old for. I also transferred all the games from around the house onto a set of shelves we moved out of Mercy's room. After lunch, Mercy finally had her well child check up, which had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus lock down. We had to wait outside until a room was ready for us, then had our temperatures checked at the front door and were given masks from the clinic to wear. The doctor said no one with a fever is allowed in, so he's pretty much only seeing healthy people. Mercy has grown 4.5 inches since her last visit and went from the 12th percentile to the 35th! After her check-up, I dropped her off at Olivia's and brought Haley home with me to play with the boys. In the evening, Cassie and Beto came over to do laundry, meet the puppy, and eat dinner with us.

My main accomplishment on Tuesday was finishing the organization of the guest suite, aka the Barrios' old rooms. We moved everything from Mercy's closet into the closet of what we are now calling the sitting room. I was able to purge some stuff, consolidate some stuff, and find new homes for some stuff. We have a lot of stuff! We also moved the guest bed into the new guest room and I started getting things ready for my parents to visit.

Wednesday I worked on the hall linen closet. I had already moved all the photo albums and games out and was able to move a bunch of linens like pillows and blankets that have been stored in random places around the house into the one closet. I'm super happy about that. In addition to the first aid stuff, the closet also has a shelf of home goods backup storage like boxes of tissues, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. On Wednesday evening, we went to the Brown farm for archery. Mable got to see her sister, Molly (who is much fatter and much lazier than Mabel), and loved playing with Brown's retriever puppy Luna. Mabel may be small, but she is feisty! Cora and Luci brought back some old rotary phones from their grandpa's house and they all thought the devices were fascinating. It's hard to believe that cell phones are still quite new and novel to me, but they are all my kids have ever known. Also, Abraham lost a tooth.

I spent Thursday morning running errands, then finished cleaning and preparing for my parents in the afternoon. Mabel got to explore the rest of the backyard for the first time and tuckered herself out with all the new smells and things to dig at and chew on.

Friday was spent almost entirely in the kitchen. I baked a double batch of cookies as well as a cake to freeze for my dad's birthday meal, started yogurt, hard boiled eggs, dehydrated elk liver (for dog treats), turned the leftover deer neck into stock, and prepped 4 lbs of chicken. Cassie came over mid afternoon to do some laundry and I was finally able to give her the quilt for Lucas, along with some board books and a few other baby related things I found while cleaning this past week.

My parents arrived around 5:00 and we visited with them for just a bit before heading over to Jeb's for a BBQ. We had already made plans with the Brown's before my parents decided to visit, and we didn't feel comfortable bringing extra people considering Covid restrictions, so they stayed at the house and worked on Civil Air Patrol stuff. We contributed chocolate chip cookies and deviled eggs to the meal and had a lovely time.
