The Great Crazy: Week Four

Sunday: Mercy again spent the majority of Sacrament meeting in the foyer with her dad, but behaved well enough to allow me to attend most of Sunday School and all of Relief Society. She napped well after church, we Skyped with the Kress grandparents, then went over to our Home Teacher's house for dinner. That took most of the evening, so when we got home it was time for scriptures and bed.

Monday: For the first time in a while I was up and working before the kids were awake. I always have so much more patience when I'm not startled out of sleep by the sound of fighting or someone whining for food. I did a couple loads of laundry, went grocery shopping (where I got $48.17 worth of goods for $1.66), finished the drapes for the front room, sorted through Mercy's clothes (packing away what's too small, and bringing out the next size), and prepared a proper dinner (broiled chicken drumsticks, sauteed squash, home made whole wheat bread, and grapes). Matthew did a second coat of putty on the molding in the bathroom, then caulked, primed, and painted. While he waited for things to dry, he worked on installing the stairs. We also got the lawn fertilized. For Family Night, Matthew attempted to give a lesson on good manners, but ironically, the boys were super rowdy and the lesson lasted maybe a minute. Abraham chose gummy bears for the treat, and for the activity I had us all go for a ride, where we drove through a neighborhood of big fancy houses and wondered about the people who live there.

Tuesday: Matthew went across the river to do the drug test for Sandia first thing this morning. Then there was the yogurt fiasco in the morning, unruly children and a lovely walk with Mercy around noon, and family movie date in the evening. In between all that, Matthew painted the walls and ceiling of the bathroom and started on the quarter cope on the stairs. I mowed the lawn and did some generic house work. We heard from the relocation people and spent quite a lot of time looking into the moving company, temporary housing, and realtors.

Wednesday: Mercy and Abraham slept horribly last night. I was up with one or the other of them just about every half hour all night long. I think they both have colds. Today we worked on finishing odds and ends and cleaning the house up really nice. Matthew finished up the downstairs bathroom and put the toilet and sink back in. We put fresh mulch in the beds around the house, finished the stairs and put up the hand rail, took a van load of stuff to the storage unit, dropped off a big box at Good Will, returned a full bag of books to the library, and scrubbed down every room in the house. I don't think our home has ever been so clean! We also sold the scooter and used a portion of the proceeds to buy several pints of ice cream.

Thursday: We contacted a realtor we think we'd like to work with and she came by this morning. She was impressed with the work we've done and feels confident she can sell our house quickly. Mercy went down for her nap a little earlier than usual, so I took Abraham with me to the store (I know it seems like I go grocery shopping all the time, but it's because I shop sales and use coupons and WIC, and I usually don't have the patience to take the children I almost always have with me to more than one store at a time). Abraham started out great, but things started going sour at the check out counter and escalated to a full blown meltdown by the time we got home. Matthew put him in his bed to calm down and he ended up sleeping for nearly five hours. Hyrum played in the bath with a boat set he got last Christmas for almost two hours while Matthew took apart the sink and toilet and started patching the walls. I worked on the moving check list, looking into things like change of address forms and PO Boxes. Many of the check lists I found online suggest that at around two weeks prior to departure you should take some time to visit favorite places one last time, so after dinner I took the kids for a walk along the Happy Hollow trail. Due to Abraham's crazy long nap, he wasn't ready to lay down at bed time, so to keep us all sane, the boys got to watch some TV while I went to visit teach and Matthew started milling his hard Maple wood.

Friday: We tore down some of the siding we need to replace around the front door, and I did two coats of the white paint. Matthew fixed up the decorative wood thing under the front window and got it painted, skim coated the upstairs bathroom, and continued working on milling wood. In the afternoon we got hit by a crazy hail/rain storm.

Saturday: Today I sanded and primed the upstairs bathroom and checked off a few smaller odds and ends. I took the kids to the park in the evening for a little bit so they wouldn't have spent the entire day inside watching tv. Matthew painted the red on the landing of the porch and it really pulls everything together. He also finished milling all the wood for the kitchen counter.
