First Steps

Mercy Girl took her first steps tonight. Matthew was on campus teaching his class and the kids and I were hanging out in the front room before bed. I stood her up a couple feet away from me and she took several quick, confident steps right into my lap. It wasn't a fluke either, because she did it over and over again, falling into my arms and giggling like she'd discovered the funnest thing ever. I knew it would happen soon because I've recognized the recent look of frustration at the fact she couldn't crawl from point A to B while holding something. She knew there had to be a better way to travel.

While I'm on the subject of firsts, this week our sweet girl also experienced her first ride in a grocery cart sans car seat and enjoyed a few nibbles of  her first free Walmart cookie. She was over the moon excited and acted as though the whole thing was just about the best thing ever. I almost can't wait to go shopping again just to watch her dangle those cute little legs from the cart, wave her arms around like she's on an amusement park ride, and grin wildly at every person passing by.

It's a blurry phone shot, but does manage to capture her enthusiasm reasonably well. And while I'm thinking about it, might I mention my abiding gratitude for the three seater shopping carts and the patrons that leave them for those who can really utilize them.

You'd think our children would have a little compassion on us as we try to keep them tiny. So selfish. But so cute.

I get so mad at the people who use the three seated carts who only have ONE kid with them...that is...when they run out. Congrats to Mercy on her first steps!
