The beginning of this month feels like it was absolute ages ago. It began with me in Southern Utah on my girls trip, is ending with Matthew off on his hunt, and so much happened in between! Most notably, we spent a week in Northern Utah with Matthew's family, I turned 40, school started, seminary started, and we published two videos on YouTube (one with plans). It's definitely been a busy month!
On the whole, school is going well. Hyrum really seems to be thriving in middle school and is happy. He's getting up promptly and getting his morning jobs done, plays four square during lunch with a number of his friends from church, plays D&D with Harry, Spencer, and Isaac after school on Mondays, and is enthusiastic about young men's on Wednesdays. Middle school can be so rough, but so far it's treating Hyrum really well.
Abraham has found himself mixed in with some less than ideal friends, which has caused a bit of trouble, but he's being more conscience and it's getting better. He's a bit bored with the actual school work, but needs to prove to his teachers that he deserves to be in the gifted program. When he gets up and gets going, he thrives, and when he sleeps in and is lazy, he breaks down and has a hard time functioning at all. He's definitely still working on finding his new groove.
Mercy appears to be doing fine at school. She's in a class with her best school friend Malia and isn't struggling at all with the work or any social aspects. She does seem very tired and often breaks down at home, but I suppose that's to be expected re-entering the real world after 17 months of quarantine life.
Matthew and I are very tired as well. All the vacations and traveling really wore us out. On top of that, we've been putting in a lot of time towards the YouTube endeavor. I've started doing pretty much all the editing and find that not only do I enjoy it more than I anticipated, I have at least some aptitude for it. It's always nice to find something new that you're good at! As of today we have 245 subscribers and 1.4K hours of watch time. We are really learning so much and are excited to see where this takes us.
Seminary is off to a great start. We are holding it from 6-6:50 here at our house and it has made such a big difference to be in person. I have seven regular students, with two more that come every other week when they are with their dad. It's a really good group. I taught the first two weeks all by myself, but bishop finally found someone who felt they could accept the calling and now Becky Jensen is my companion! I am really thrilled with that and look forward to teaching with her this year.
Covid cleared up for a while over the summer, but the Delta variant is really exploding and we are back to wearing masks in all public places (including the kids at school). It's not so bad for people who are vaccinated, but it's been pretty deadly for those who are not. There's talk of maybe having to go back to virtual school because of the lack of support staff (custodians, bus drivers, substitute teachers, etc.) but I really, really hope they are able to stay in person.
Goals:
With school starting back up, we've had to reevaluate our daily routine. Chores have been slimmed down a bit, and some goals have been pared back. The kids are still doing an hour of music a day, but school work has pretty much taken over the rest of their time. I've finally gotten back on the bike after most of the summer slacking, and even went riding with Hannah and Clara once. I've been running several times with Mabel as well, which has been surprisingly satisfying. Matthew is just trying to keep his head above water with work and YouTube and his church calling. Sometimes life is like that. We continue to focus on family and personal scriptures study though, and I suppose as long as we are consistent with that then we are doing alright.
