We celebrated New Year's Eve with a fancy dinner of shrimp scampi and sparkling grape juice. The kids watched a movie and went to bed without complaint at a normal time. Matthew was working on building some doors in the garage and since I had no one to play with, I too went to bed at a pretty normal hour. The power went out about 20 minutes before midnight, so Matthew was forced to call it and "early" night as well. New Year's day was again spent working on projects and playing music.
Matthew was supposed to go back to work on Wednesday, but the weather forecast called for freezing temperatures, wind, and several inches of snow. Since such weather is not normal in Albuquerque and the city is not equipped to handle it well, everyone was advised to stay home and off the roads. He got another day of vacation for free! We were certainly happy about that, but a bit bummed that our dentist appointment for all five of us to get our cleanings, as well as my new crown permanently cemented, was also canceled and had to be rescheduled. It didn't seem to end up being quite the winter storm that had been predicted, but we got a decent accumulation of snow by New Mexico standards and it stuck around long enough for the kids to properly enjoy it.
Matthew went back to work on Thursday and first thing Friday morning the kids and I were able to get into the dentist. My tooth has been feeling practically perfect, so they removed the temporary cement and put the crown on permanently. Hyrum and Mercy got their cleanings and passed inspection without a single cavity or complaint. Abraham unfortunately is suffering from a break out of fever blisters on his lips and they couldn't work on him for fear of them spreading and we had to reschedule him yet again.
The boys worked hard over the break and spent hours playing piano in order to get to level five on Musiah and earn a prize. We had been worried about icy roads with New Mexico drivers, so we postponed our trip to guitar center for their rewards until the weather had properly cleared up. This evening we set out on a quest to find guitar picks, drum sticks, and a ukulele for me so I wouldn't be the only one left out. The row of buildings Guitar Center is in had the fire alarm going off when we got there and we weren't allowed to go in, so we checked out a new and used music shop not far away. There we found a used drum stool on sale which we purchased for Abraham (and dad) as the stool that came with his drum set is already too small. They also had a bucket of free drum sticks, so Abraham happily picked out a pair of black ones. We returned to Guitar Center where Hyrum got a pack of assorted picks and I got a reasonably nice ukulele. Everyone came away quite pleased!
