Back in October, the van started loosing power when accelerating and would shake rather noticeably when going from first to second gear. We prayed about it, and felt like Matthew should replace the drive shaft. There was a week in November when the Shaw's let us borrow their car while they were out of town. That was a tender mercy, since the project turned out to be something of a nightmare. It was a difficult job, mostly because several parts were stuck and hard to remove, and the whole thing took three days with many trips to Auto Zone for specialty tools. The replacement did not fix the problem, but in retrospect the experience turned out to be a real blessing.
I'll fast forward my story to last week, when the transmission really started to die. Second gear stopped working a while ago, but when Matthew couldn't get the van into reverse, we knew something needed to be done. We had some money set aside and considered buying a new vehicle, but despite all our research and discussion, we just didn't feel good about that option. Matthew found a place here in town where he could buy a used transmission for $500, and after praying about it, we felt like he should do the replacement. On Friday he went and picked up the "new" transmission and got to work taking out our broken one that afternoon. One step of the process included removing the drive shaft. Because he had followed the prompting to replace that part several months earlier, when he had time and access to another car, what took him three days the first time only took him an hour this time around. In fact, the whole job went extremely well and the van was put back together and running smoothly in order for us to go to church this morning.
We are grateful to have access to the Spirit and know that Heavenly Father is ready and willing to guide us when we ask for His direction.
