Friday, August 31 After a morning of visiting teaching and grocery shopping, the boys and I arrived at the house to find Matthew had come home early. His work for the day consisted mostly of running things on the computer so he came home to work on our latest home improvement project: the boys' room.
The "before" shot. The room is normally pretty empty, with just Abraham's crib, a mattress on the floor for Hyrum, and a dresser on the opposite wall. Most of their toys are in the play room downstairs.
Saturday, September 1 Over the course of the previous week and the Labor Day weekend, Matthew took off the vent over the door and patched the hole, tore out the baseboards and removed the caulk, covered the floor, and scraped the texture off the ceiling. We have also been researching paint and design styles for the room. While the room is being worked on, Abraham's crib and the dresser have been moved into the office, the computer desk has been moved into the master bedroom, and Hyrum is sleeping on the couch downstairs.
Sunday, September 2 I taught a Sunday School lesson about the Word of Wisdom in our Gospel Essentials class. After church we all fell asleep (Matthew, Hyrum, and I all napped together on the sectional) and didn't wake up until 5:30pm! Needless to say, the boys stayed up pretty late that night.
Monday, September 3 After a long day of trips to Menards and working on the house, I topped the long weekend off by falling on the stairs and hurting my right foot. I've given birth, so obviously it was not the worst pain I've ever been in, but it was pretty bad. Matthew loaded everyone in the car and took me to the hospital. I had been coming down to get dinner on the table, so by the time I checked in and found a corner in the waiting area, the boys were restless and beyond ready for something to eat. Matthew took them to pick up some food and check out a few things at the two hardware stores across the river since we were over there anyway, and I hung out in an ER issued wheelchair watching Pawn Stars on the tv across the room. They actually got me back for x-rays remarkably fast, but it was a busy night for them, so I didn't get put in a room or speak with a doctor for a couple hours. They were very prompt once I was taken back though, and after another round of x-rays diagnosed a sprain and sent me home with an ace bandage wrap, an air cast, and a pair of crutches. Everyone got to bed around 11 that night.
Tuesday, September 4 Hyrum's first day of preschool! Because I was entirely incapacitated, the morning didn't go as I had hoped with a special breakfast, pictures taken outside the front door, and me walking him into class for the first time. Due to the late night, we had to get Hyrum up before he was ready to be awake, convince him to get dressed, and force a bit of food into him. He didn't wear the outfit I had planned, but rather the t-shirt and shorts he had worn the day before. Matthew took him, since I can't drive, and went back 2.5 hours later to pick him up. He had a great time, although he brought home a few multi-colored coins from his classroom and we had to have our first discussion about stealing. His second day on Thursday went equally well and I feel really good about our decision to enroll him.
September 4 - 7 I was instructed to keep my foot up and iced for at least two days, then take it easy for several more after that, so Matthew ended up staying home all week. There were a few work related things he could do from our computer, but mostly he took over being mom. He cooked, he cleaned, he went grocery shopping, he took care of the kids, and found time to sand and mud the boys' room ceiling. He's been amazing. I loved a comment he made toward the end of the week, "do you really spend this much time in the kitchen?!" Yes, yes I do.
Saturday, September 8 I'm feeling better, and am able to bear some weight on my foot. I'm down to walking with just one crutch and can get around with much less difficulty. This evening we went to our ward opening social and I perhaps overdid it a bit, but I've got tomorrow to rest and will hopefully be able to at least hold down the fort when Matthew goes back to school on Monday.
