Polar Vortex

The country (well, the world really) has been feeling the effects of a massive polar vortex. I remember being in Indiana for the last big one. We had a solid inch of ice on our driveway and my babies couldn't spend more than a few minutes outside because the air was so cold it could damage their lungs. With climate change, polar vortexes have been more common, but this current one has been particularly intense. It actually reached us down here in New Mexico and essentially shut things down for a couple days. Church was canceled on Sunday, and Sandia told everyone to work from home on Monday and had a delayed start on Tuesday.

The temperatures were down in the single digits and we had to keep Mabel inside Sunday and Monday. The kids, especially Hyrum, were thrilled with her company, but Mabel did not love being stuck in her doggy pen. Even though it was still in the teens on Tuesday, she refused to come back inside.

The snow stuck around for several days, but it was so cold out that the kids didn't even want to play in it until the sun came back and it started to melt.

To be fair, most of the country has had it far worse than us. Millions of Texans lost power and temperatures have been well below zero in many northern states like Minnesota and Michigan. We've only had to deal with unusually cold weather for a few days, but many regions have been under this intense weather system for over a week and it will linger for them much longer than it will for us. I am grateful for a warm house and all the resources to keep life running as usual. I'm thankful that, for us, it was a novel distraction and not a disaster.
