There have been a lot of rabbit sightings while we've been on our walks over the past week or so. Last night Matthew brought his hand pellet gun and managed to shoot one of the bunnies on the edge of the Mirehaven neighborhood. He bagged it and brought it home, and to our surprise, it wasn't dead yet. It actually had quite a bit of hop left in it, and so we let it loose in the backyard for Mable to get a feel for chasing down a rabbit. Even with a gimpy leg that had been broken and healed badly some time ago, and having been shot, the bunny was still faster and maneuvered better through the yard that the beagle. It found it's way under a pallet of bricks and both Mabel and Matthew worked hard to coax it out. Once it was clear the rabbit could no longer give chase, Matthew quickly ended it. Mabel was definitely enthusiastic and it was clear chasing rabbits is in her blood. While shooting out in the neighborhood isn't illegal, it felt a bit sketchy, so I don't think we'll do it again. It sure made for an interesting adventure though, and a delicious dinner, which is always the end goal when hunting.
