The 7th was the first Sunday of the year and thus the first day of the new Sunday schedule. We now start church at 11:00 am with ward council at 9:30. Last year ward council was at 7:30 so more often than not I was already gone before the kids were out of their rooms and Matthew was entirely responsible for getting everyone fed, dressed, and out the door on time. Usually he and I hardly said more than good morning to each other until the drive home from church around noon. While the mornings certainly feel busier now that I'm around to help do things like comb hair and make breakfast, it is nice to spend the morning with my husband. Primary went about as smoothly as I could have hoped with teachers meeting their new classes, kids navigating new seating arrangements, and a brand new set of Sunbeams being introduced to primary. Abraham is now in senior primary, which just blows my mind, and Mercy is an old pro now that she's no longer in the youngest class. I sure love primary and am so grateful for the opportunity to serve in this calling. Considering it was fast Sunday, the kids were remarkably patient after church as they had to wait around while Matthew and I had Temple Recommend interviews.
On Monday morning Mercy was invited to go play with Kinzlee Walz. Kinzlee is about a year younger than Mercy, but they get along so well. The relationship is perfect as Mercy benefits from not being the youngest and Kinzlee benefits from not being the oldest. They both love dolls and playing family and it's really a very precious friendship they are developing. While Mercy played, I went grocery shopping at Walmart. I then dropped Mercy off at school, went to Smith's, and stopped by Painted Sky to drop off the day's snack for Abraham's class. While I put away all the food storage stuff I bought from the case lot sale at Smith's, I had a lovely long phone conversation with my old roommate Laura, who recently got called as primary president in her ward. We postponed our Family Night in order to allow Matthew to go help Dave Jolley transport a new couch from the store back to his house. For dinner I made chicken noodle soup and rolls.
I made Runzits (rolls with a pizza inspired filling) and salad for dinner on Tuesday. I used my calzone dough with a sausage/pepperoni/mozzarella filling and we weren't super thrilled with the result.
The internet was out at Sandia on Wednesday, so Matthew worked from home. It was particularly convenient for me as Hyrum had his 9 year well child check up that afternoon and with Dad home I didn't have to find someone to watch the other two or take them with. We had leftovers for dinner.
I spent most of Thursday finishing Matthew's llama quilt. We had cashew chicken for dinner.
President Monson's funeral was yesterday and it was televised from the Conference Center. I was particularly touched by the fact that after all was said and done, the life of Thomas S. Monson boiled simply down to the fact that he was a man of service. Another quote of his that has really stuck with me is "Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved." I struggle with it now, but I hope that by the end of my life it can be said of me that I lived by that motto. For dinner I made a second attempt at Runzits since I had quite a lot of filling left over. I used my Parker House roll recipe and we liked them much better. We invited Jeb and the girls over to join us. They are making their way through the Harry Potter movies, so while we ate we watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Other than karate in the morning, we spent most of today cleaning and organizing. Matthew cleared all the contents out of the closet under the stairs and for the most part we found new homes for nearly everything. The wheat and bottled water went under Hyrum and Abraham's beds, the air conditioner, Christmas stuff, and several other items went up in the attic, and we got rid of a few things. We moved the mini fridge into the far back corner then Matthew took Hyrum to Peter Piper Pizza to use a coupon for a free pizza that he earned for perfect attendance. While they were gone, I moved all the camping stuff from a corner in our bedroom down into the closet. My watch tells me I climbed 40 flights of stairs! At two I went with the kids to a last minute birthday party at a nearby park. Mercy was thrilled to hear them call the classic chasing game "duck, duck, moose." Game night tonight was at Jeb's house and they finished up the game of Fate they started last week.
